The National Science Foundation states that the average person has between 12,000 and 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those thousands of thoughts, 80% were negative, and 95% were exactly the same repetitive thoughts as the day before. The one thing that we all have in common is that our brain is prewired to gravitate to the negative. Many people do not get started or complete their goals because they have self-imposed limitations or limiting beliefs about themselves. What most people do not understand is that we have the power to change our mindset and look at things from a completely different perspective. Believe it or not we can remove these blocks or limitations by simply changing our verbiage and outlook. In many instances, this can be as simple as getting rid of the word “Why” and replacing it with the word “What”. The fact is that successful people possess mental toughness and the right mindset. They are not born with this ability. Rather, they have learned it.
When we look at great leaders throughout history, we observe several characteristics and/or skill sets. It does not matter if we are referring to Military, Business and/or Family. I hear all the time that Leaders are born and not made and this is simply not true. A strong leader has strong foundations and principles that guide them. These are the same leadership skills that are taught at WestPoint, Annapolis, Harvard Business School, Wharton or Columbia University. Great leaders are efficient at communication, organization and motivation. They all lead by example and they are mental tough. This is just the tip of the iceberg, but these are all learned skills. If you could master the art of communication, you would be half way there. Leadership plays a huge role in our everyday life and extends to our family as well. Being an effective leader benefits us in every aspect of our life. Professional, Family, Community and Spiritually.
Oprah Winfrey stated “Everyone should have a mentor”. This is for good reason. Success is never a one-man or one-woman show. In fact, many of the most well-known entrepreneurs in the world credit large parts of their accomplishments to the guidance of a mentor. After dropping out of Harvard, Bill Gates says it was his mentor and investor, Warren Buffet, who took the time to give him invaluable business advice. In my career, I have always sought out knowledge from every source that I could get it. I have had many mentors, who I owe credit to my success. The right mentor can assist us with shaping our thoughts or the way that we look at things. They can help us generate an idea and problem solve critical issues. Most importantly, they can talk us off of the ledge when we are pursuing a bad idea. I call this a sanity check. Everyone has goals that they want to accomplish and if they are not achieving them there is a reason why. It could be their mindset, approach or even limiting beliefs. Sometimes we just need someone to walk us through the situation and help us get on the right path.
